Mr Martin Hamilton-Smith - Leader of the Opposition, Member for Waite

Martin Hamilton-Smith is the MP for Waite (the Mitcham area) and holds 3 university degrees including Masters Degree in History (Uni NSW) and Business Administration (Adel). Martin is married to Stavroula with 3 children from 3 year to 23 years.
Martin is Leader of the Opposition and a former Minister in the 1997 - 2002 Liberal Government and politics is his third career!
He served with distinction in the Australian Defence Force from 1972-1994, including several overseas postings and service in the elite Special Air Service (SAS).
Mr Hamilton-Smith was Commander of Australia’s first counter-terrorist force.
Before entering parliament in 1997 he was proprietor of a group of commercial and residential property companies specialising in private child care in two States.
Elected Leader of the Liberal Party in April 2007 he has forged a new direction for the party and challenged State thinking with the February 2008 launch of his Master Plan for Adelaide.

Raymond Anthony Garrand - Chief Executive Officer Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology

Raymond Garrand is the newly appointed Chief Executive of the Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology.
Prior to this Raymond had 4 years experience as Chief Executive of the Department of Trade and Economic Development.
Mr Garrand is an Honours Graduate from Flinders University and has served on the Higher Education Council and Education Adelaide Board for several years and been actively involved in various other boards including working with the Economic Development Board.

Mr Garrand has worked for nearly two decades at the highest levels of Government in Australia with experience with the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet in Canberra and as an economic advisor to Governments in South Australia and Queensland and therefore brings a strong business and industry focus to his current position.

 

 

Keynote Address

 

Mr Greg Tunny - Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer ASC Pty Ltd 

 

Mr Greg Tunny was appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ASC Pty Ltd in 2004.  ASC, previously known as the Australian Submarine Corporation is Australia’s leading naval engineering, shipbuilding and naval through-life support company; having revenue exceeding $300 million and in excess of 1,300 employees.  ASC constructed and is now responsible for the through life support and evolutionary upgrade of the RAN’s highly successful Collins Class submarines.  In October 2007, the company entered into an Alliance with the Commonwealth of Australia and Raytheon Australia to deliver the RAN’s three new Hobart Class Air Warfare Destroyers (AWD); ASC being the shipbuilder for this highly complex $8 billion program.
Prior to joining ASC Mr Tunny was the Managing Director of Thales Air Traffic Management (Thales ATM)  a wholly owned subsidiary of the French defence and aerospace electronics giant Thales Group.  Thales ATM is the world’s largest exporter of Air Traffic Management Systems which are large, highly complex software intensive systems.  During his tenure Thales ATM delivered the following high profile national air traffic control systems; China, Australia TAAATS Upgrade, South Africa, Vietnam.
Prior to joining Thales ATM, he was with ADI Limited, then Australia’s largest Defence contractor for 11 years.  During his final 3 years at ADI, Mr Tunny was the Director of Business Development and Strategy.  Before taking up that position, he was for 6 years (founding) General Manager of ADI’s Software & Systems business.  During his time in that role ADI developed the Australian Defence Force’s Joint Command & Control system.
Mr Tunny graduated with an Executive Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Melbourne in 1990.  He also holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (Physics) from the Capricornia Institution.

Craig Bates - Managing Director JLB & Associates

Craig enjoyed more than 20 years in the Royal Australian Navy as a Navigation and Warfare Specialist before joining his father’s business in the early 90s.
Craig now heads up the Bates Group of Companies which includes:

  • JLB - Australia’s largest management systems consultancy in quality assurance, environmental management workplace safety and food safety

  • TQCSI - the second largest, JAS-ANZ accredited, third party certification body operating in Australia with 4,500 certifications in 26 countries

  • AMS – NATA accredited, food & water testing laboratory.

Craig is recognised as a leading expert in the development and integration of quality, environmental, OHS and food safety management systems. He has implemented such systems into a number of leading Australian organisations such as Sydney Olympics venues, the mining sector and SMEs. 
Craig brings valuable experience to a number of boards and industry associations throughout the country and is currently the Chair of the Association of Accredited Certification Bodies.

Mike McLean - CEO McLean Management Consultants Pty Ltd

Title of Plenary presentation:
"Australian Quality - 40 years enabling business performance and export”

 

Michael W McLean (B.Bus; FAICD, CMC) is Managing Director for McLean Management Consultants (Est. 1988) servicing mostly, Manufacturing, Mining and Government sectors. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) and a Certified Management Consultant (IMCA). He commenced his consulting career with WDScott in 1984; formed McLean Management Consultants Pty Ltd (MMC) in 1988; sold MMC to Bywater UK (Bywater McLean) and then sold it to Axon plc UK 2001.
Prior to consulting, he was a  Manager at National Springs (Tenneco); Comalco; Amco-Wrangler and Standard Telephones & Cables (ITT) Sydney, New York and Belgium (Bell Telephone). He has been trained and consulted in the production systems of ITT USA, Nissan, Yazaki, BHP Steel, GM (Holden), Electrolux and Orrcon Steel. Currently, both Michael and Tritos are ASEAN Automotive Quality and Technical Specialist for an AusAID Program.

He has co-authrored (Saeed Sadek, Axon UK) two Continual Improvement books sold in Australia, UK and MIddles East; co-developed (Dr Tony Burns) "Q-Skills" interactive training software and sold worldwide; completing his third book called "The Main Game" with Doug Hurst Grp. Capt. (ret'd) for 2008 publishing. Currently studying (part time) for a Doctorate in Education from QUT. Dr Laosirihongthong is an Engineering Lecturer at Thammsat Uni., Bangkok, Thailand.

 

Dr James Galloway  - Chief Executive, JAS-ANZ

Title of Plenary presentation:
'JAS-ANZ Accreditation –Helping Markets Work Better'

Dr James Galloway was appointed CEO of JAS-ANZ in 2007. His background includes roles in government affairs and technical regulation, and involvement in a range of trade and industry initiatives focussing on standards, conformity assessment and regulation.
Some of the main areas he has been engaged in are the APEC Telecommunications working group and Sub-Committee on Standards and Conformity, the IEC Conformity Assessment Board, as well as domestic and Trans-Tasman trade and regulatory initiatives principally in the electrical and communications product sectors.
His current role at JAS-ANZ is an extension of his interest in the often unacknowledged role of standardisation, accreditation and conformity assessment in the quality of economic and social life.

 

Brett Abraham - Manager Business Development and Technical Services, JAS-ANZ

Title of Plenary presentation:
'Greenhouse Gas Validation and Verification'

Brett was part of the team that developed JAS-ANZ’s new Greenhouse Gas Validation and Verification programme. Brett has over 20 years experience with accreditation programmes, including management systems and product certification programmes.

 

Alan Beacham - CEO KM&T Australia

Title of Plenary presentation:
Sustaining Improvements – Learning from those who have learnt the hard way!

Graduating from Nottingham University UK, Alan started his career as a Foundry Engineer for Rolls- Royce Plc. He progressed to become a Quality manager with responsibility for internal and external suppliers. Latter roles included Technical manager and General Manager of a manufacturing plant. A change of pace saw a move to Formula 1.
Working as Production Engineering Manager and then Operations Manager, Alan led a change program that saw a 40% reduction in time from design to race track. After re-locating to Australia, Alan provided business improvement and development consultancy services to the oil & gas and aerospace industries.
Alan joined KM&T 2.5 years ago to set up the Australasian arm of the business and has grown the team to 12 people. The company has provided business improvement services to large and small clients in the aerospace, construction, automotive, rail, marine, FMCG, mining and healthcare sectors. The company’s approach is founded on the principles of the Toyota Production System.

 

Anne Marie Hall - Teacher Christ the King School Warradale

Anne Marie is the Year 5 Teacher at Christ the King School Warradale and has been working with her class to identify and combat the carbon footprint of both the school and other areas of the students' lives. AOQ(SA) has invited the school to present the finding from its work.

            

Jeff Ryall,  MBA, CQE, AOQ Juran Medal - CEO Quality Award Partners®

Title of Plenary presentation:
"Working to Other Peoples' Rules: Managing Process, Innovation and Adaptability in a Compliance World"

Jeff originally qualified as a metallurgist, and following a technical and management career established Quality AwardPartners® where he is now managing director. He is one of Australia's leading quality management experts, and over the past ten years has consulted widely in Australia and abroad.
Jeff holds an M.B.A. and Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment, and is recognised by the American Society for Quality (ASQ) as a Certified Quality Engineer. He is a Senior Auditor certification of quality systems, has audited with the Australian Universities Quality Agency and has qualified as a QS-9000 Auditor. He is a Senior Member of ASQ.
Jeff also teaches Management Systems and Balanced Scorecard in the R.M.I.T. Master of Engineering (Quality) program. He brings a unique breadth and depth of experience to bear through his work with organisations in a broad range of manufacturing and service industries in strategic Quality, process and risk management - including quality system development and certification - within the context of business management and the business excellence frameworks.
Following an industrial and management career, Jeff has worked extensively throughout Australia, and abroad, in a range of organisations, encompassing services, manufacturing, utilities and not-for-profit.  He has extensive experience in the practical application of Quality, including:

Jeff is a co-author of five books, and author of numerous papers on the application of Quality, and a regular participant at Qualcon.

Professor John Dalrymple

John Dalrymple began his professional career as a physicist, graduating as the first physics graduate of the University of Stirling in Scotland. He then moved to the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow to undertake Doctoral research in the field of wastewater treatment. After teaching Applied Physics for a time, John then moved back to the University of Stirling to the Management Science Department where he taught in the quantitative methods and materials science area.
As a management academic, John began to work on projects with industry, taking a keen interest in the manufacturing sector. Here he worked on problems in manufacturing logistics and developed an interest in quality management. Along with colleagues, John established the Scottish Quality Management Centre at the University of Stirling to underpin the teaching and consultancy activities of the Department with research in the field of quality management. He has worked on a wide range of problems and was awarded more than 1 million pounds sterling to conduct research in companies in areas related to quality management.
Part of John’s research in the area of performance measurement and performance management focused on the approach to performance of partnerships of unlike partners with different reasons for existence. The philosophy is that quality and performance must be linked to the reason that the organisation exists.
Professor Dalrymple will provide the conference summation.

Dr. Devi Ranasinghe   - DRs TQM Training Service Pty. Ltd

Dr Ranasinghe works as a Quality Consultant to the aged care sector and she is a Principal Advisor to DRs Total Quality Management Training Service Pty. Ltd.  She has held numerous managerial positions in private, public and non-profit health and aged care organisations for more than 20 year including a unique Incident Reporting System’ for aged care organisations.  She has conducted an action research for her Doctoral studies at Southern Cross University and has developed an indicator system to Monitor and Measure the Impact of Continuous Quality Improvement in aged care in Australia. 
Her professional efforts were recognised by the Minister for Health and Ageing, when she received the ‘Minister’s Award for Excellence in the Aged Care Industry 2003 for Professional Development (Individuals)’. 

 

Raphael M. Dua
General Manager Micro Planning International Asia Pacific Pty Ltd

Raf Dua has been working for the past 50 years in the Project Management field as both a Planning & Cost Scheduling Engineer and a Project Manager/Director. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, a Member of the Australian Institute of Project Management, a Fellow of the Planning Engineers Organisation. In addition he is a Member of the British and Australian Computer Societies as a PCP as well as an Associate Member of the British Institute of Management. He is currently Federal Vice-President of Defence And Industry Course Association. He is also a member of the PMI College of Scheduling and the Earned Value Performance College. 
Raf consulted to the Australian Submarine Corporation in Adelaide from 1988 to 1994 where he was responsible for all  the Planning and Scheduling of Construction & Outfitting of the Collins class submarines. It is interesting to note that the Collins project produced a first in major defence projects by being launched ON TIME and ON BUDGET. [The dates having been held since the Project Definition Study in 1987, which Raf was also a participant]  
Since 1999 he has continued to consult to Boeing Australia for the establishment of the R5 refit project management plans (using Micro Planner X-Pert) for the F111 upgrades at Amberley Air Force Base.
From early 2004 until now, Raf has been contracted as Senior Planner and Scheduler for a major NZ government project which has a budget of $NZ1.2 Billion. This project is unusual in that it is located on four disparate and rural sites across both the North and South Islands. The project is both a Collaborative Work Agreement as well as using Earned Value Methodology to manage TOC.

 

Andrew Boorman

Quality Directorate Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology

Andrew Boorman is Manager Quality Systems, Quality Directorate in the Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology South Australia. He has worked in the VET sector for over 20 years in a range of roles primarily concerned with regulation, curriculum development and quality assurance in the VET sector. In 2006/2007 he led a working group of state and territory registering body officials in the development of revised national standards for the vocational education and training sector. He is currently a member of a national working party developing resources that will support evidence based continuous improvement in registered training providers and also provide outcome data to inform the risk management processes of state and territory regulatory bodies.

 

Ron Chapman

Ron Chapman is a management systems consultant specialising in quality, environmental, safety management and business excellence systems. He has a Masters degree in management, diplomas in OHS management and environmental science and management and a diploma of business excellence assessment (EFQM). He is a licensed business excellence assessor for the British Quality Foundation.
Ron has completed over 30 business excellence benchmark visits in Europe researching best practice in lean manufacturing and management, environmental and safety management, balanced scorecards, business process management, human resources, organisational development, and IT for business excellence.
His successful projects include integrated management systems installations in Defence manufacturing companies, government departments, and tier 1 automotive manufacturing companies including ISO/TS 16949 installations, ISO 14001 installations, and IBOS installations in various companies.
Ron is also an experienced technical writer and a business analyst.

 

Craig Ottaway, MBA, MAIPM, MAOQ
President Australian Organisation for Quality Inc

 

Craig is the President of both Australian Organisation for Quality Inc and Australian Organisation for Quality (SA) Inc. He is employed at ASC Pty Ltd in the position of Business Improvement Manager where he works within the company with the functional areas to assist them in the improvement of their systems and process. Since 2000 Craig has held quality management positions at ASC changing his career direction in December 2007 to the business improvement function. He enjoys working in six sigma and lean (management 101) methodologies and finds this as an effective method to improve the understanding of business improvement philosophy.

 

Kiril Uzunov

Kiril Uzunov's research interests are in software dependability modelling, software metrics and reliability assessment, and software engineering. His background is in software development (Electronic Design Automation software and real-time software), software testing and verification, and project management. Before joining DSTO in 2006, he spent 11 years with Freescale Semiconductors Inc. and Motorola Inc. as a Senior Software and Verification Engineer, Technical Lead, Project Lead and Program Manager. He has a Masters degree in Computer Systems Engineering.

 

Mitta Rout,  B.SC. with Honours in Mathematics, Master in Computer Applications
 
  Director – QA, Capgemini India Pvt Ltd

Mitta Rout is currently placed  as  Head – Quality Assurance and Six Sigma Champion in Capgimini- India. In the current assignment, she

  • Has been playing a key role in organization wide process improvement culture, journey with Six Sigma & Lean.

  • Led organization for process improvement, adapting to advanced processes & technology and thus enabling  a self sustained  process maturity environment within the company. As a result, Capgemini - India was qualified for SEI CMM Level 5.

  • Taking further on to continuous improvement she spearheaded the journey for CMMi Level 5 process maturity.

  • She is  a Certified Quality Analyst (CQA)  and a Trained Lead Assessor in the  SEI 
    CBA-IPI  method and also trained in CMMI and Six Sigma Black Belt.

Prior to her assignment in Capgimini India, Mitta worked as Head – OPG (Organization Process Group) in Mastek Ltd. India. She Played a key role in adoption of CMM framework in the company. Developed corporate Metrics Program and mentored and conducted training programs on Project management, Metrics management, Software Quality Assurance and Defect Prevention. She steered the quality drive within the company and  had the company  assessed for sw-CMM  Level 4  in 1999 and  sw-CMM Level 5 in 2000.
Mitta started her career in Tata Consultancy Services and has around 20 years of experience in various roles as Software developer and Project manager and QA analysts.
She has attended various international SEPG conferences; conducted tutorial in Indian SEPG conference and presented paper in Asia Pacific SEPG and European SEPG conferences. She has also undertaken process assessment and consultancy services for companies in India, US, UK and Ireland.
On academic front, she passed out B.SC. with Honours in Mathematics (Ranked First Class First) followed by acquiring  of Degree – Master in Computer Applications (MCA).

 

Dr. Thong Nguyen - Research Program Manager, D.S.T.O.

Dr Thong Nguyen holds BE (Honour I), BSc and PhD from Adelaide University and MBA (TechMgt) from Deakin University.  He is currently the Research Program Manager for Airborne Mission Systems Branch, AOD, DSTO, where he has been leading a team of 8 researchers and NICTA colleagues to develop expertise on Capability Integration.  He is also an Associate Research Supervisor with the University of South Australia's Defence and Systems Institute (DASI).

 

Sailaja Choppalli - Lean IT officer – QA, Capgemini India Pvt Ltd

Sailaja Choppalli is currently placed as  Lean IT officer – Quality Assurance in Capgimini- India. In the current assignment,  she has been involved in identifying key projects and tracking of Lean and Six sigma activities in organization. She has been part of SEPG and playing key role for process improvements to Quality Management System.
She is Certified internal Auditor by KPMG, trained on Six Sigma, Lean and “Introduction to CMMI 1.2”.
Prior to her assignment in Capgimini India, She worked as SQA manager in Wipro Technologies for two years.  She Played a key role in adoption of CMMI framework in the company. She has contributed for internal Audits, metrics analysis, establishing process control boards and facilitate projects for Quality assurance. She played key role while rolling out of lean implementation in two major verticals Insurance and Securities.
Started her software career in Wipro Technologies and has around 10 years of experience in various roles as Software developer, Database Administrator and Project manager and SQA.
On academic front, she passed out B.Tech. in Civil Engineering from SV University.  She worked as Assistant Executive engineer for 4 years in PWD department before joining Wipro.

 

Trevor Harrison,  BSc(Hons) MBA - PhD Student, University of SA

Trevor Harrison's research interests are in software systems architecture and knowledge management.  His background is in software development (real-time information systems), technology change management and software engineering process improvement.  Before studying full-time for a PhD, he spent 6 years with Logica and 11 years with the Motorola Australia Software Centre.  He has a BSc(Hons) in Information Systems from Staffordshire University and an MBA (TechMgt) from La Trobe University.

 

Angela Tuffley

Angela Tuffley is a Senior Consultant in Software Process Assessment and Improvement for the Software Quality Institute (SQI) at Griffith University. She is a Software Engineering Institute (SEI) Authorised Introduction to CMMI Instructor, SCAMPI Lead Appraiser and an SEI Visiting Scientist. She is the Chair for the SEPG Australia Conference and in 2004 she was a member of the Federal Government’s Working Party for Software Quality Accreditation.
She is an Experienced Qualified SPICE Assessor and contributed to the world-wide initiative of the International Standards Organisation to develop the Process Assessment Standard ISO/IEC 15504 (the SPICE Project). Prior to her position with the university, Ms Tuffley had over 20 years of IT industry experience, both in Australia and overseas.

 

Ian Abrahams MEngSc  CPEng  CPRM  MIE.AUST  MAIRM  MAIPM
      
Managing Director, CorProfit Systems Pty Ltd.

Ian graduated from civil and structural engineering, attaining a Master in Construction & Project Management at the University of New South Wales. After working in many multi-disciplinary projects where design and documentation has had to be carefully coordinated with construction work, he moved into project management services.  This led to Ian performing in business strategies, where performance management, strategic planning and change management were key functions to perform. 
After embarking on the development of a corporate risk management system for Australia’s largest general insurance group, Ian with others founded CorProfit Systems to continue the development of automated risk management software as well as methodology for implementing risk strategies.

 

Dr. Neil Davidson
Centre of Excellence in Defence and Industry Systems Capability
Defence and Systems Institute, University of South Australia

Dr Neil Davidson is an Associate Professor with the Defence and Systems Institute, and is Research Leader for the Enterprise Process Capability program. Neil holds a PhD in Theoretical Physics as well as a Certificate in Engineering Management. After starting an academic career in physics, including 2 years as a research associate in the United Kingdom, he worked in quality management systems as a trainer, auditor and program manager. After moving to Adelaide at the end of 1999, he joined Motorola Inc as a metrics and measurement specialist, rising to the position of Principal Staff Engineer with responsibility for measurement programs across the globally distributed, 6000-strong Motorola Software Group. He joined the Centre of Excellence in Defence and Industry Systems Capability in June 2006. He has experience of capability models such as the Software CMMSM and CMMI®, as well as applicable industry standards and business excellence models, and is a Motorola Six Sigma Black Belt. His research interests include measurement systems and process improvement models and methodologies.

 

 Janet Haydon
            Manager, Service Excellence and Performance Management.
            Community Connect, Department for Families and Communities

Janet is currently the Manager of the Department for Families and Communities Service Excellence Program.  The Service Excellence Program was developed through a comprehensive consultation process in partnership with government and non-government and the private sector in South Australia.  Janet was previously the Strategic Planning Manager for the Department for Families and Communities, the Department of Health and the Department of Human Services, and hence has a strong planning background.  Her previous love was in health promotion and hence understands the need for creating supportive environments, building public policy, strengthening community involvement, developing personal skills, reorienting services and culture and creating beneficial partnerships.
Janet is also currently the Manager of the Performance Management Team and who challenges the culture of government and support project officers across the department to consider better ways of performance management of grants.

Qualifications: Masters in Engineering - Quality Management, Bachelor of Science, Diploma of Education.

Working History:

Started working within "quality" in the pharmaceutical industry in 1990 and moved to the automotive industry in 1992, working for a number of automotive suppliers as Quality Manager.
In 2005 made the move out of automotive and into Computershare and branched out into the field of Risk Management and OH&S. Currently in charge of coordinating Business Continuity Planning and Disaster recovery activities for all Computershare business units in Australia.

 

Dr. Jane Goodyear, Ph.D. B.Eng. (Hons) CEng MEIT - Massey University

Originally from the UK, Jane has worked as a production engineer in a 1st tier supplier to the automotive industry. A key role involved the reorganisation of the whole production facility and the streamline of operations using Japanese methods such as quick changeover, cellular manufacture, Kaizen, etc. This eventually became her passion and she decided to embark on a PhD in designing cellular manufacturing systems embedded with quality. This gave her the opportunity to work with a diverse range of manufacturing companies. On achieving her PhD she became a lecturer in manufacturing systems. Jane came to New Zealand in 2006. In recent years Jane has been building both her teaching and research in the field of Lean operations and the application of lean in SME's and low volume, high variety manufacturing scenarios is of particular interest. Another area of interest is how the tertiary sector can collaborate to improve manufacturers’ competitiveness.

 

Nigel Grigg - Massey University & NZOQ Invited Guest

Dr Nigel Grigg is Senior Lecturer in Quality and Statistics at Massey University in New Zealand, and the coordinator of Massey's suite of graduate and postgraduate programmes in Quality Systems.  He is a Chartered Quality Professional, a current director and member of the New Zealand Organisation for Quality, and member of the Chartered Quality Institute, the American Society for Quality and the Institute of Directors.  He began his career in quality in 1990 as a quality engineer and project coordinator in nickel alloy forging, before spending 10 years as a lecturer and senior lecturer in Glasgow Caledonian University. He moved to New Zealand in 2003.
He has authored, co-authored, and delivered more than 80 research papers on diverse aspects of quality management. Three of these papers have won international best paper awards from prominent journals, and he was the 2004 recipient of the Annual National Award of the Institute of Quality Assurance.  Besides teaching and research, he is active in providing consultancy and training to organizations in New Zealand and overseas.

Dr Martin Strange

Martin Strange is a freelance technical analyst currently working on a defence-related project for BAE Systems Australia. His concept of the Mesh arose from his earlier work as a user interface designer with an interest for simpler solutions. He holds a PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Adelaide and an MSc in Computation in the Life Sciences from the University of York, UK.

Moses Kauye - Defence Materiel Organisation, RAAF Williams

Mr. Moses Kauye works as an Executive Officer - Quality Assurance, in the Materiel Information Systems Branch within the Defence Materiel Organisation. Moses has previously worked in the area of Software and Systems Engineering Process Improvement and has also worked as a Software and a Systems Engineer in a number of projects within the Defence Materiel Organisation. Moses has a Master of Engineering degree majoring in Systems Engineering and a Bachelor of Engineering degree majoring in Software Engineering.

 

Dr. Elena Sitnikova - University of South Australia, Mawson Lakes Campus

Dr Elena Sitnikova is a Senior Lecturer within the Defence and Systems Institute at the University of South Australia and since 2006 has been a Senior Consultant for the Centre of Excellence in Defence and Industry Systems Capability in the area of enterprise process capability improvement. Elena's research interests are focussed on quality and software engineering processes including software T&E process improvement and the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI®). Prior to joining the University of South Australia, Elena worked in the software engineering industry for the Motorola Software Group for five years and has a broad range of experience in project management, process & quality management, and software engineering including both development and testing. Elena was also a training instructor for Motorola University conducting courses for Motorola employees. 

 

Bob Welldon


Bob Welldon is an aeronautical/computer studies/operations research/systems engineer by training, a software quality engineer, quality manager, reliability engineer and Six Sigma Black Belt by certification, a CMMI process engineer by assignment, and a systems and measurement thinker by choice. He has done a little of everything, including traditional jobs as a RAAF Engineer including flight test engineering, computer programmer, CAD and IS administration, Systems Engineer and Quality Manager. An excellent team player, he has led, been a member of, and facilitated Process Action Teams.  Bob's strength is in organisational and project measurement systems.  He has worked for Motorola/Freescale Semiconductor and is presently with BAE Systems Australia.  Bob is also a trainer for Practical Software and Systems Measurement and is the American Society for Quality’s Australian Country Councillor.

 

Bruce Riley

Bruce Riley is a consultant focused on change and organisations.  He works closely with CEOs and Senior Managers in organisations in both the public and private sectors, and across a wide range of business activities, including manufacturing, service, government and research. Bruce's original development in change practices was in education followed by seven years in Telstra as a national corporate change consultant.  In Telstra he was: on the Board of Network Design and Construction SA/NT and helped design the amalgamation process with Western Australian; the national lead consultant in an Australian wide approach that resolved workplace issues before they became dispute; and was responsible for the implementation of quality in numerous Business Units.

 

Ron Mazzachi

Ron has extensive experience in the development and application of Quality Assurance approaches in both the Vocational Education and Training (VET) and health care sectors.
He is currently a Principal Research Consultant with the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) in Adelaide.
His fields of interest includes QETO and the Australian Quality Training Framework where he has provided independent advice to jurisdictions, DEEWR, and the National Quality Council on the effectiveness of the national and State and Territory systems for registering providers of VET in Australia.
A qualified lead auditor, he is currently supporting Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Aust Ltd develop materials, train and evaluate Registered Training Organisations and Assessors to implement a VET focussed version of the Business Excellence Framework.
He has extensive experience in the collection and use of VET data and previously managed the Data Collections and Analysis Brach at NCVER which is responsible for the collation, publication and research into Australia’s VET and Apprenticeship system data.

 

Shan Ruprai

Shan Ruprai is the Chairman of the Australian Organisation for Quality NSW and the President of the Asia Pacific Quality Organisation. He is the Chairman of Australian Institute of Business Improvement.
Shan is Board member of the Accreditation review of JAS-ANZ. He has also served on the advisory boards of International Certification Bodies.
He was the Chairman of WSAA-QAN (37 major government owned water utilities of Australia) for 10 years. Shan had active input in revising ISO Standard 9001:2000 and now ISO9001:2008 via QR/8 and QR/2. He had active input in designing and implementing the NSW (Australia) Government Quality Assurance Policy that was launched by the Deputy Premier in 1993.
Shan has in-depth experience both in public and private sectors specialising in Quality, Risk Management, OHS&R, EMS, Process Re-engineering, Corporatisation, Restructuring, Best Practice, Benchmarking, Contract Law, Balanced Scorecard, Business and Strategic Planning.
Shan has delivered many papers on a variety of management topics. Shan's achievements have been acknowledged in the print media with over 62 articles in the Press. Shan is a Juran Medallist.

Mike is an empathic trainer and facilitator, able to engage people from the boardroom to the shop floor.   He works both throughout Australasia and abroad and has completed successful consulting assignments over a period of 15 years.

Magdalena Hadji is Business Strategist for Blue Sky Thinking™ and principal consultant.  She specialises in strategic and profitable growth planning, systems creation and modelling, business plans, entrepreneurial funding and business management.  She is a current Board member, has procured start-up funding for several new businesses and presents research on private equity methods for family business transitioning.  In addition to her speaking and advisory work, Magdalena publishes locally and internationally predominantly on business methods to create superior organisational performance.  Prior to commencing her consulting business, Magdalena worked for fifteen years in manufacturing, distribution and retail.  She held various senior management and executive roles, with experience in global trade, quality and continuous improvement, customer relations, security systems integration, occupational health and safety and environmental management.

Kiril Uzunov

Kiril Uzunov's research interests are in software dependability modelling, software metrics and reliability assessment, and software engineering. His background is in software development (Electronic Design Automation software and real-time software), software testing and verification, and project management. Before joining DSTO in 2006, he spent 11 years with Freescale Semiconductors Inc. and Motorola Inc. He has a Masters degree in Computer Systems Engineering.

Commenced Electrical Fitter Mechanic apprenticeship with General Motors Holden Woodville plant & nominated 1985 Apprentice of the year.
Pursued additional advanced diploma studies in electrical engineering.
1985 - 1994 Electrical leading hand / projects division at Bridgestone Automotive components division in which I met and worked for Andrew Downs.

Sam started with SAGE at its infancy stage in 1994 when Andrew Downs left Bridgestone and founded S.A.G.E. Electrical working from a back shed of 3 people to a fast growing National Engineering company of over 200+ people and turn over of $40 Million plus.
In 2000 a board was founded and become a director & share holder in the company.
Sam's role in the organisation has moved from a all rounder on the tools when a team of 3 to a senior project manager and now in his current position of 2 years as a National Standards & Innovation manager.

Ken Hollands

Ken has been a management consultant for over 20 years and a third  party quality auditor for 10 years. Previously he was a manager in engineering and woodworking industries, sourcing timber for dolls houses from Scandinavian forests and paper products from printers.
He is a Fellow of the Institute of Business Consulting and an IRCA QMS Principal Auditor. He obtained the University of Durham's Advanced Certificate in Business Counselling to inform him when advising small businesses.
After 12 years with a large international consultancy Ken has run his own business since 1997. He has assisted a number of businesses gain ISO 9001:2000 and worked as a consultant, trainer and auditor.
Within the past few years Ken has been actively involved in chain of custody work, initially within the rail industry and now within the timber trade where standards are set by FSC and PEFC. He has observed how ISO 9001 registered and non registered businesses have successfully adapted their processes to obtain FSC/PEFC certification.

 


Biju Kumar

Biju Kumar MV is a Lead Consultant in the Quality Consulting Practice of Satyam Computer Services Ltd. In his capacity as a consultant, he has provided quality consultancy to some of the blue chip companies in Satyam’s customer base.  He is operating from Melbourne since the last 3 years, leading the quality assurance team of one of Satyam’s biggest accounts in Australia. In 2005 when Satyam achieved organization wide Maturity Level 5 on CMMI, he led Satyam’s CMMI implementation in its Melbourne Development Centre. He has over 15 years of experience in Quality which spreads across software and manufacturing industries. He was also instrumental in ensuring compliance to AUS 810 standard and managing the Satyam AUS 810 audits for one of its biggest accounts in Australia. Biju holds a Bachelors degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering. He is also a Certified Software Quality Analyst (CSQA®) and Project Management Professional (PMP®). In 2006, he won the first prize for the best paper in SPI in Satyam Process & Technology Conference held in Hyderabad, India.

Robert has nearly 30 years experience in managing the marketing and sales development in major companies including, SA Brewing, Boral Energy (Origin), Pizza Haven and Seeley International. In addition he has managed national operations for a major retail food group.
In addition he worked with the Department of Industry and Trade consulting at a senior level to SA companies on improving their business development practices, marketing, innovation, commercialisation and strategy. Robert has also mentored start up ventures in the growing mobile telecommunications content market.
He has been a CEO and Director of high technology start up companies in the IT and Pure Food Industries and understands the challenges of building small innovative businesses in the technology sector. In addition he has established a number of national food retail chains and has experience in major shopping centre location retail.
Robert has also lectured in Marketing, Retailing and Sales at an undergraduate level at the University of SA, developed and delivered the MBA subject Information Strategies for Management Decisions dealing with the strategic use of IT and Knowledge Management in business and business development.

Janice Gill
RCPA Quality Assurance Programs Pty Ltd

Janice Gill is a Clinical Biochemist, who after completing a Science Degree worked in state government, Commonwealth Government and private pathology laboratories for over twenty years.  During this time she gained the professional qualification of Membership of the Australasian Association of Clinical Biochemists.
In 1994 she joined the RCPA Quality Assurance Programs which provides external quality assurance programs for pathology laboratories to assess the quality of the results they are generating.  Janice is now the Program Manager of the Chemical Pathology QAP which is one of the world’s leading EQA providers in offering 26 different external quality assurance programs which are taken up by pathology laboratories in 44 countries.

During this time Janice initiated the accreditation of the company to ILAC Guidelines for the Requirements for the Competence of Proficiency Testing Providers, believing that the organisation that checks the quality of pathology testing should itself be managed under a quality framework.

 

Ken Saman - Vice President Operations, YourAmigo Ltd.

In his role as VP of Operations at YourAmigo Ltd (www.YourAmigo.com), Ken is responsible for YourAmigo’s engineering operations and the delivery of incremental online revenue for its international clients. He is a professional engineer with a diverse business and technical background.  Prior to joining YourAmigo, he was the CEO of Paradigm Icon, a consulting firm that delivered technology-based project management services globally.  In this role he contributed to improving the organisational performance of clients in the Manufacturing, Automotive, Oil & Gas, Energy and Local Government sectors as well as the delivery of global projects in excess of $80 million.  With a background in software engineering, he previously held a number of engineering, technical and project leadership roles within Motorola. Ken holds an Honours Degree in Information Technology & Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Adelaide and is currently completing a Masters in Business Administration from the University of South Australia.

Colin Pitman has a background in Agriculture and Engineering holding degrees in both.  He has had extensive experience in the private sector prior to working at the City of Salisbury.
Amongst other responsibilities, he has lead a team who have been innovative in Energy Management, Environmental Design, Waste Management and the traditional Civil Engineering works of Local Government.  More notably however, over the last 18 years he has been a leader locally and internationally in Water Management having won numerous awards and the World Water Association Award in Beijing in 2006.
He has been an active proponent of stormwater, being the partial solution to Adelaide’s Water Supply.

Previous History:

Colin Pitman was previously employed by the City of Enfield and prior to that was Project Manager for building sites associated with construction of small to medium industrial complexes, industrial steel building construction.
He is Immediate Past President of the Institute of Municipal Engineering, holds a Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering, Local Government Engineer' Certificate, Master of Business Administration in Town Planning, Building Surveyor's Certificate and is currently the South Australian Representative of the Australian Road Research Board and the Asset Management Sub-Committee of the Institute of Municipal Engineering.

 

William Fenner

Bill Fenner is an engineering graduate of Adelaide University, 1945, and worked initially as a geophysicist in South Australia, looking for natural gas, oil, coal and uranium. He then worked for ICI for 11 years and in 1961, he moved to Melbourne to join Conzinc Riotinto as the Chief Mechanical Engineer of Comalco and in due course, managed the design and construction of several major projects - a bauxite calcination plant at Weipa, an alumina plant at Gladstone, an aluminium smelter in New Zealand, and a solar salffield at Dampier in Western Australia.
  Bill joined the Quality Circle movement in the late 1970's, did Dr. Deming's 4-day Course in 1987, and TQM has been his primary interest ever since, with 58 overseas trips, many to attend Quality Conferences, and has given talks a such conferences in U.S.A., Japan, Germany, China and Mongolia.
  He has been a part-time lecturer at Monash University and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, and a TQM Consultant for many years. His No.1 publication is, Quality & Productivity in the 21 Century, published by Consensus Books in the year 2000.  Bill is a Senior Member of ASQ, and a Fellow of AOQ and Engineers' Australia. He was presented with the first Foley Award at QUALCON 2005

 

Cyrill Wetherill, Defence SA

Cyril Wetherall is the Managing Director for MC Technologies, a Product Design and Development Consultancy. Previously, Cyril spent most of his RAAF career in Fighter Squadrons, in Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore, as well as in Australia.  He was the Deputy Commander for 474FM Squadron at Nellis AFB when on exchange with the USAF. His Industrial experience includes working with BAE Systems as Manufacturing Manager, Chief Engineer for Maritime Patrol Group, and Structural Design IPT Lead for Vipac Engineers & Scientists on the JSF SDD Phase.  Cyril has worked a number of RAAF Aircraft Modification Teams, including F-111C Pavetack development (BAE Systems), P3-B Autopilot replacement (Joint RNZAF-RAAF Program working with BAE Systems, and Safe Air NZ, ), and AIR 5276 the ESM upgrade for the AP3C. 

He is a past President of the Australian Division of the Royal Aeronautical Society, a Fellow of IE Aust, and is a registered Chartered Practicing Engineer in Australia and the UK.   His qualifications include Lead Auditor for ISO 9001, and Auditor for AS 9100.  He is a graduate of the Joint Services Staff College, and holds a Graduate Diploma in Business Management.   

Cyril’s   experience with the JSF SDD Phase and more recent with the RIP phase, highlighted the US  and European aerospace components manufacturers move to requiring their Global Supply Chain supplier demonstrate compliance with AS 9100 and NADCAP Standards, as well as the more traditional ISO manufacturing Standards.   Compounding the costs of meeting theses newer requirements has been Congress’ growing compendium of International Trade in Arms Regulations (ITARs).  These Regulations limit and control Technology transfer to Australian component manufacturers, and place time consuming demands on Program Managers.
